Is it Really God?

Many claim to speak on behalf of God, and numerous manifestations are claimed to be from God. But, we would be wise to discern the spirit and not blindly follow that, which on the surface, appears to be God.
"And no marvel; for Satan himself is transformed into an angel of light." — 2 Corinthians 11:14
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world." —1 John 4:1

I remember when I was in college and the a certain laughter movement came out. There was some good to it, but there was a lot of fluff and idiocy. I would be in the "prayer line", and dozens of times, literally two hundred people would all "fall out in the Holy Ghost" as the minister came by and prayed for them - except for me. After this happening many, many times, I began to wonder, "Is there something wrong with me, or are all these folks tapping into something I'm not?" Eventually I began to realize that most of those folks were just falling because that's the thing to do.
I remember one service, as I was on the P&W team, after the music service I decided to leave and go watch a movie, because I knew the guest preacher was going to preach on money and tithes, as he always did, and then they would line up folks for another "Holy Ghost prayer line" so they could all fall on the floor and laugh or whatever came upon them, and I knew that I wasn't going to receive a dog-gone thing.
I was so hungry for God at the time that I was willing to go along with the order of the services, but looking back, I see what a waste of time and energy that was for me. It wasn't a complete waste, as there were many hungry folks gathering together, and many relationships were strengthened during this time. However, I've learned to be cautious. If those movements of God were so effective, there should be more fruit.
We "sheeple" are funny. I have older relatives who grew up in and around the old Pentecostal shakers, and they have to exhibit that shaking to feel that God has moved in a service. I have been around old-school Pentecostal preachers who feel that they have to get into the microphone & scream, distorting their voice to the point that you can't even understand what they are saying. But you can tell it's fuel to their fire.
Having grown up in full-gospel churches, I would never try to initiate a movement of God's spirit on my own. All we can do is be a willing vessel, and rest in Him to move. "An evil generation seeks signs & wonders."
